To create a fresh brand for Simpsons Fish and Chips that has the flex to work across a multitude of marketing channels, online and offline, and reflect the quirky nature of the Simpsons team.
Simpsons offer traditional fish and chips with a twist in Cheltenham and Stroud. Their aim is to offer not only top quality food, but also a unique experience for customers. Opening their doors back in 2009, Simpsons’ ethos and fresh approach to marketing led to their Cheltenham shop being named the UK’s Number 1 Fish & Chip Takeaway in 2016.
We shaped the new Simpsons branding around the idea of traditional British fish and chips, which the strapline ‘Long Live Fish & Chips’ also supports. The Simpsons brand is edgy, quirky and retro-inspired, using bold nautical visuals with imperfect linear illustrations and characters to bring the brand to life.
To ensure customers received a consistent brand experience from online to in-store, we delivered creative signage with a Simpsons’ edge. Using the nautical character illustrations, we designed a large wall mural that immediately turns heads, ensuring the shop is noticed whether you’re passing in the car, on a bus or by foot.
We also designed outdoor shop signage, a pavement sign and branded bicycle. Simpsons now have a shop front that is more inline with their current branding and attractive to customers.
With a brand that has grown from strength to strength, it was a chance to get creative with marketing techniques. With Simpsons’ established reputation and significant flex in the brand, it opened up a whole world of opportunities for their target market, both young and old.
As well as serving delicious fish and chips, it was also important to Simpsons that customers had the opportunity to understand where their food was sourced from and encouraging youngsters to learn about sustainable produce.
With this in mind, we created a children’s book exploring where fish and chips come from, using the Simpsons’ characters to tell an educationally-engaging story exploring the journey of fish and chips from the sea to the shore. Due to the success of this first book, we then went on to support Simpsons in a special Christmas edition weaving the narrative of care and compassion for others into a festive tale.
But it’s not just children we’ve helped Simpsons connect with, they’re also a brand that’s passionate about ending loneliness and supporting elders in the community. We’ve supported Simpsons on many campaigns, although one that sticks with us the most was the pairing with the Campaign to End Loneliness, where students and pensioners in Cheltenham were invited to meet at Simpsons to form new friendships over fish and chips.
Along with larger campaigns, we’ve continued to work alongside the business to ensure they continue to meet the needs of customers with a special Simpsons twist. This includes creative menu design (for both print and digital), exclusive Simpsons merchandise (such as branded jute bags) and illustrative takeaway packaging.
2019 was a big year for Simpsons as they celebrated 10 years of being open, proving how much trust, loyalty and reputation they had built up not only in their local community but industry-wide.
To help get the word out there, Simpsons wanted to shout from the virtual (and physical) rooftops about their glorious decade of achievements with Eat Marketing supporting them across the different channels.
From display advertising to targeted social posts and bespoke 10-year merchandise, we were there behind Simpsons every step of the way, championing their success through delivering creative content.
