Let’s Talk About Persuasive Product Design

Whether you’re perusing the aisles in your local supermarket, or checking out the menu of your favourite restaurant, how products appear to you can make or break its success. Bright and colourful may catch the eye, but will it result in a purchase? To get you on the right path, here are some helpful tips on creating design that persuades your customers.

Do the research

Before you put pen to paper or start brainstorming design ideas, it’s important to fully understand who your customers are. What do they look for in your type of product? What are your competitors doing? There are a variety of ways that you can collect this information, from finding relevant conversation online via Google Search to getting out onto the streets to ask people in person. From what they look for in restaurants or on the shelves, to what they really want from your product, this type of research can really help bring your product design together.

Perfect the message

For Copywriters, the key question they ask is: so what? When writing your copy, it’s important to always keep in mind: Why should the consumer choose your product over its competitor? Labels really do make a difference, and it’s key to draw a reaction from the recipient through different writing styles, images and placement.

Whichever direction you decide to take with your messaging, always be as creative and personal as possible. Target their physiological needs, and reach out to what they’re looking for. Once you achieve that, you’ll benefit from your customer loyalty.

Create the design

When it comes to the design of your product, it’s important to refer back to the psychology behind it all. To start, which colour do you associate with your brand? For luxury items, you may want to use deep reds, browns and gold, whereas for healthier food products, earthy green hues and watery blues may work better. But what about branding? Design should be kept clean and coherent, making sure that people instantly recognise your brand and connect with it.

It’s not just the design you need think about either, it’s the position of the product. Where in the shop or website is it placed? What do the products around it look like? Once you know this, you can work to ensure your product stands out. Afterall, you only 3 seconds to make sure the customer’s decision ends with your item.

Once you have the customer’s attention, how do you keep it? Many believe the best way to convert is to make the customer’s brain think and engage with a product. Maybe there are instructions to an offer (incentivised), or perhaps there’s a puzzle or game for the customer to take part in. Either way, you’ve hooked them in, and they’re a lot more likely to make a purchase.

Finally, it’s important to remember who you’re targeting. Your product could be amazing, but if the design appeals more to children than your target of adults, it’s likely to flop. Always keep in mind: “what do my customers want?” and you’re likely to be on to a winner.
