Uber, Deliveroo & the Rise of Food Delivery Businesses

Delivery-2

Do you love a Friday takeaway as much as our team do? Well we’ve got some exciting news, UberEats, of the Uber network, have recently declared their plans to take their business to London, where they hope to take on the city’s food delivery market. This is great news for UberEats, but what does it mean for the other food delivery competitors Just Eat and Deliveroo? Here we explore the takeover by the world of food delivery, and what this means for the future of UK restaurants.

Game on

UberEats have, with or without realising, declared war on the big food deliverers of London. By recruiting cyclists and drivers, and promising a bonus of £100 for the partners who sign up, they’re officially stating ‘we mean business’. Despite UberEats being new to the UK, they’re currently available in 16 major cities (mainly in North America), and have even admitted to being hugely popular with every city they work in. Bad news for, Deliveroo.

But wait…

This year, Deliveroo have made a whopping £130m in revenue –  firmly leaving their mark as one of the UK’s most promising technology companies. Plus their current list of available restaurants is impressive, with the likes of Pizza Express, Leon and wagamama (the team’s favourite) already signed up as partners. And as they’ve already established themselves in many of the UK’s major cities, we can’t wait to see how their battle with UberEats will unravel.

What about Just Eat?

It’s been a successful year for Just Eat, especially when you look at their most recent advertising campaign. From ‘Balti Rocks’ to the most recent ‘Manband’, their tv ads are everywhere, and unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve more than likely encountered them. Moving forward, Just Eat have also awarded media agency, Karmarama, with their UK ad account in order to develop their advertising even further – something we can’t wait to see!

And then there were three

Or are there? Amazon have recently announced their decision to offer Amazon Fresh in east and central London. Although not quite the same as a takeaway delivery, this will provide people with option of buying their full weekly shop (with same-day delivery) from a business and brand they trust. Could there be an Amazon Eats on the horizon?

What does this all mean for you?

According to recent data, by 2020 70% of all restaurant traffic will be outside – whether that be online, by telephone or via takeaway. This is because the millennials are a generation who are always on the move; a generation who prefer to grab something quick rather than stay in and cook. So in order for you and your business to keep up with the ever-growing demand for delivery, apps like UberEats, Deliveroo and Just Eat might be the ideal route for you to go down.
