Christmas Advertising… Are you Ready?

christmas advertising

Have you thought about Christmas advertising? Christmas is such a lucrative time for food businesses and a perfect example of Christmas advertising at its best is Sainsbury’s.

In previous years, Sainsbury’s has given us Christmas adverts featuring Jamie Oliver, but last year, their ads began to feature real people celebrating Christmas their way, and they have carried this idea through in 2013.

This year, Sainsbury’s has claimed the honour of being the second largest ‘best performing’ supermarket (just behind Tesco), and they have pulled out all the stops with their Christmas advertising. We all know Christmas ads are popular, especially if they promote the ‘feel good’ factor… and more interesting and different they are the more people will talk about them. The 2013 ad is called ‘Christmas in a Day’ and once again, it focuses on real people and what makes their Christmas day special. Adults and children talk about celebrating Christmas their way, we witness their excitement, what they like to do…and their emotions are like our own.

By using real people, Sainsbury’s are telling us, the viewers, that they, as a business, are just like us. Because we recognise the emotions and the actions of the people in the ad, we immediately feel we can relate to Sainsbury’s as a supermarket provider. It really is clever Christmas advertising; our spirits our lifted because of the festive season and emotional ads like this lift us even higher!
